Mental Health and Addiction Treatment in Sacramento

Mental Health and Addiction Treatment in Sacramento | CORE Medical Clinic

For many people, addiction and mental health challenges do not arrive separately. They are connected, layered, and deeply personal. Someone dealing with anxiety or depression may turn to substances to cope. Someone in recovery may struggle with emotional pain that has never been fully addressed.

That connection is not a coincidence. It is one of the most important things to understand about lasting recovery.

At CORE Medical Clinic, we believe that treating addiction without addressing mental health leaves part of the picture incomplete. Our clinics in Sacramento and West Sacramento provide integrated, compassionate care that supports the whole person, not just one part of their story.

When Addiction and Mental Health Overlap

It is more common than many people realize for addiction and mental health conditions to occur at the same time. Stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges can all play a role in how substance use develops and how difficult it becomes to stop.

This is sometimes called a co-occurring condition or dual diagnosis. When both are present, treating only one often means the other continues to interfere with progress.

That is why integrated care matters. When mental health support and addiction treatment work together, patients have a stronger foundation for recovery. They are not just managing a substance. They are building the emotional stability that makes long-term progress possible.

What Integrated Care Looks Like at CORE Medical Clinic

CORE Medical Clinic provides outpatient addiction treatment for adults in Sacramento and West Sacramento, with a focus on medication-assisted treatment, counseling, and personalized care planning.

Our approach combines medical and mental health support from the beginning. Every patient receives a thorough assessment so that their care plan reflects their full situation, not just one part of it.

Our programs include:

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) MAT is an evidence-based approach that uses FDA-approved medications to reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms, and support stability during recovery. CORE Medical Clinic offers several MAT options, including:

  • Buprenorphine — Available as a detox and maintenance program, with medical visits during the first week to stabilize the patient on the medication
  • Methadone — A long-term program that includes individual and group counseling
  • Sublocade — A once-monthly extended-release buprenorphine injection that provides consistent medication levels throughout the month
  • Vivitrol — An injectable extended-release naltrexone that blocks the effects of opioids and supports recovery without opioid dependence

Counseling and Recovery Support Medication is one part of the picture. Counseling is another. CORE Medical Clinic offers individual counseling, group counseling, and family counseling to help patients process their experiences, build coping skills, and stay connected to their goals.

Recovery education is also part of the process, covering topics such as stress management, relapse prevention, self-care, and overall wellness.

Long-Term Detox For patients who need a gradual approach, long-term detox programs allow for careful tapering of medication under medical supervision.

Aftercare and Case Management Recovery does not end when a program does. CORE Medical Clinic provides aftercare services and case management to support patients as their needs evolve, including referrals for mental health, medical, housing, and employment services.

Free Treatment Is Available

CORE Medical Clinic was awarded State Opioid Response IV grant funds, which means free treatment is currently available for qualifying patients.

If cost has been a barrier to getting care, this may be an important option to explore. Call either clinic directly to confirm your eligibility and take the first step.

A Safe and Respectful Environment

Recovery with Respect is more than a phrase at CORE Medical Clinic. It is the standard we hold ourselves to every day.

People who come to us are often carrying a great deal. Shame, fear, uncertainty, and the weight of difficult experiences are all part of the journey many patients bring with them. Our team is here to meet patients where they are, without judgment and without pressure.

A respectful clinical environment matters because trust is the foundation of effective care. When a patient feels safe, they are more likely to be honest, stay engaged with their treatment, and keep showing up for themselves.

CORE Medical Clinic is CARF accredited and licensed by the state of California, reflecting our commitment to high-quality, professional care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Initially, an intake assessment and admission medical history and exam is completed by counseling and medical staff. Treatment options are discussed and a course of action taken. Medication recommendations are made and initated to balance safety and benefit as much as possible. It is very important to let counseling, dispensing and medical staff know how the medication is working or not so appropriate adjustments can be made.

At C.O.R.E., we strive to individualize treatment and maximize success. There is no time pressure. Some do well with short term treatment while others benefit from long term treatment. We know relapse is common and can have disasterous results. We work hard to treat each patient as long as is required to achieve long term success.

First we work closely with the individual to achieve a “normalizing’ dose of medication to alleviate withdrawal and craving while minimizing side effects. Working closely with medical, dispensing and counseling staff most often allows us to achieve this goal in the first few days to weeks.

Not necessarily. C.O.R.E. Medical Clinic serves patients in Sacramento, West Sacramento, and surrounding areas. People often choose a clinic based on accessibility, treatment needs, and location.

C.O.R.E. Medical Clinic accepts several health insurance plans, including Medi-Cal, MHN, Anthem, Medicare, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, Optum, Blue Shield of California, Magellan Health, and Western Health Advantage.

As most patients entering treatment know, opioid withdrawal is awful and inevitably leads to continued use. We are sensitive to how terrible the craving, restlessness, anxiety, bone aches, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, sweating, etc. can be. If alcohol, benzodiazepines, stimulants, or other drugs are involved withdrawal can be medically dangerous and require residential or coordinated medical care. Opioid withdrawal can be greatly reduced or eliminated by the early doses provided but again frequent contact with treatment staff for medication adjustments is very important.

The great majority of patients seeking treatment for opioid addiction can continue their normal life, including work, while they are working to find their ’normalizing’ medication dose. If residential or coordinated medical care is required, some time off may be necessary but again this will be individualized. Clinic hours are designed to accommodate the vast majority of working patients.

We work hard to educate patients about the benefits and safety of MAT. Many myths circulate about MAT such as it causing liver problems, bone problems and being harder to get off than fentanyl or heroin. These are absolutely false and will be discussed in detail with your treatment staff. Patients who receive MAT are much healthier than patients not in treatment. Learning to manage common side effects like constipation and weight gain can make patients healthier than they have ever been. All opioids are hard to get off but MAT can set up a very careful and safe detox when a patient is ready. An abrupt short term detox is not advised and can be difficult but a gradual, medically safe detox minimizes withdrawal symptoms. Supplemental safe, non addicting medications can further reduce unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
