Creating Healthy Holiday Routines With MAT in Sacramento

Creating Healthy Holiday Routines While Receiving MAT

The holidays can be a meaningful time, but they can also feel overwhelming for people in recovery. Changes in schedules, family gatherings, and emotional expectations may disrupt routines that support stability. For individuals receivingMAT treatment in Sacramento, maintaining structure during this season is an important part of recovery.

At CORE Medical Clinic, we support people through every season of their recovery journey. With locations inSacramento and West Sacramento, our team offers medication-assisted treatment, counseling, and recovery support designed to help individuals stay grounded during times of change. This article explores why routines matter during the holidays and how small, flexible habits can support emotional well-being while receiving MAT.

Why Holidays Can Disrupt Recovery Routines

Holidays often bring changes to daily life. Work schedules shift, social expectations increase, and travel or family gatherings may interrupt established habits. For people in early recovery or those starting MAT, these disruptions can feel unsettling.

Routines help create a sense of predictability. They support sleep, nutrition, emotional balance, and consistency in care. When routines change suddenly, stress levels can rise. This is common and does not mean someone is doing something wrong. It simply highlights the importance of planning with care and compassion.

Recovery during the holidays is not about perfection. It is about maintaining stability where possible and responding gently to change.

How Routines Support Recovery While Receiving MAT

Medication-assisted treatment works best when paired with consistency. Daily habits support both physical stability and emotional well-being. This includes attending appointments, following treatment plans, and engaging in counseling.

For people receivingmedication assisted treatment near me, routines can provide:

  • A steady structure during emotionally busy seasons
  • Reduced stress around decision-making
  • Space to notice emotional needs early
  • Greater confidence navigating social situations

Counseling for recovery plays an important role here. Therapy helps individuals recognize patterns, manage expectations, and develop coping strategies that fit real life, including holiday schedules.

Gentle Strategies for Building Holiday Routines in Recovery

Healthy holiday routines do not need to be rigid. They should be realistic and adaptable. Small, intentional habits often provide the greatest support.

Focus on a Few Anchoring Habits

Rather than trying to maintain every routine, choose two or three habits that feel most supportive. These may include:

  • Waking up at a consistent time
  • Attending scheduled MAT or counseling appointments
  • Taking a short daily walk or quiet break

These anchors can help create a sense of balance, even when other parts of the day change.

Plan for Emotional Check-Ins

Holidays can bring up mixed emotions. Scheduling regular emotional check-ins, either through therapy for substance use or personal reflection, helps people respond thoughtfully rather than reactively.

Counseling provides a space to talk through concerns before they become overwhelming. This support is especially helpful during busy or emotionally charged seasons.

Allow Flexibility Without Guilt

Recovery is not disrupted by flexibility. Adjusting routines during holidays is normal. What matters is returning to supportive habits without self-judgment.

Self-compassion is part of recovery. Gentle adjustments help people stay connected to their goals while honoring their current needs.

How Counseling Supports Emotional Balance During the Holidays

Counseling for recovery helps individuals prepare for seasonal changes. Therapy offers tools to manage stress, set boundaries, and navigate family dynamics with clarity.

During the holidays, counseling can help people:

  • Identify personal triggers with care
  • Practice grounding techniques
  • Build communication strategies
  • Maintain emotional regulation

At CORE Medical Clinic, counseling works alongside MAT to support the whole person. This integrated approach strengthens both emotional resilience and physical stability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Initially, an intake assessment and admission medical history and exam is completed by counseling and medical staff. Treatment options are discussed and a course of action taken. Medication recommendations are made and initated to balance safety and benefit as much as possible. It is very important to let counseling, dispensing and medical staff know how the medication is working or not so appropriate adjustments can be made.

At C.O.R.E., we strive to individualize treatment and maximize success. There is no time pressure. Some do well with short term treatment while others benefit from long term treatment. We know relapse is common and can have disasterous results. We work hard to treat each patient as long as is required to achieve long term success.

First we work closely with the individual to achieve a “normalizing’ dose of medication to alleviate withdrawal and craving while minimizing side effects. Working closely with medical, dispensing and counseling staff most often allows us to achieve this goal in the first few days to weeks.

Not necessarily. C.O.R.E. Medical Clinic serves patients in Sacramento, West Sacramento, and surrounding areas. People often choose a clinic based on accessibility, treatment needs, and location.

C.O.R.E. Medical Clinic accepts several health insurance plans, including Medi-Cal, MHN, Anthem, Medicare, Humana, Kaiser Permanente, Optum, Blue Shield of California, Magellan Health, and Western Health Advantage.

As most patients entering treatment know, opioid withdrawal is awful and inevitably leads to continued use. We are sensitive to how terrible the craving, restlessness, anxiety, bone aches, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, sweating, etc. can be. If alcohol, benzodiazepines, stimulants, or other drugs are involved withdrawal can be medically dangerous and require residential or coordinated medical care. Opioid withdrawal can be greatly reduced or eliminated by the early doses provided but again frequent contact with treatment staff for medication adjustments is very important.

The great majority of patients seeking treatment for opioid addiction can continue their normal life, including work, while they are working to find their ’normalizing’ medication dose. If residential or coordinated medical care is required, some time off may be necessary but again this will be individualized. Clinic hours are designed to accommodate the vast majority of working patients.

We work hard to educate patients about the benefits and safety of MAT. Many myths circulate about MAT such as it causing liver problems, bone problems and being harder to get off than fentanyl or heroin. These are absolutely false and will be discussed in detail with your treatment staff. Patients who receive MAT are much healthier than patients not in treatment. Learning to manage common side effects like constipation and weight gain can make patients healthier than they have ever been. All opioids are hard to get off but MAT can set up a very careful and safe detox when a patient is ready. An abrupt short term detox is not advised and can be difficult but a gradual, medically safe detox minimizes withdrawal symptoms. Supplemental safe, non addicting medications can further reduce unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
